Customer and Industry Input Drives Development in New Mastercam Release

Mastercam 2022 increases machining productivity and reduces overall production costs with faster and more flexible multi-axis improvements, powerful new roughing tools for 2D users, advances in modelling, enhanced intelligence and automation, and much more.

Many of the advancements in Mastercam 2022 are directly driven by Mastercam users and shops. Feedback from Public Beta releases, shop visits, customer surveys, and consultation with our expert industry partners create the practical, shop-driven focus that helps ensure Mastercam users’ success.

According to Mastercam President and CEO Meghan West:

“Mastercam is developed by listening to our users and creating solutions for their problems. We adapt to changing needs to ensure that the customer experience is the best it can be as we continue to innovate for improved automation, efficiency, connectivity, and precision. From job setup through job completion, you can depend on our technology to empower productivity.”

Improvements include:

OptiRough Toolpath for 2D Users.

The 3D High Speed Dynamic OptiRough toolpath is now available for all Mill and Router product levels. This allows users to machine very large cut depths with a bidirectional cutting strategy to remove the maximum amount of material with the minimum number of step-downs. Dynamic OptiRough allows you to create a single toolpath to machine a part, instead of creating multiple 2D operations to achieve the same goal. The toolpath is collision aware of the part, and for complex machining, the toolpath can also be aware of the tool holder.

Faster, more flexible multiaxis programming.

As more shops seek the benefits of a single setup, multiaxis cutting strategy, Mastercam 2022 adds new techniques and strategies such as the Unified Multiaxis toolpath which allows you to select multiple pieces of input geometry to generate the toolpath pattern. Using those geometry choices, the toolpath picks the best algorithm to calculate the path. Multi-pass on Deburr toolpaths supports flat chamfered and rounded edges which gives the user added flexibility, allowing the Deburr toolpath to create a quality surface finish on larger chamfered or radiused edges.

Modeling advances.

Mastercam 2022 introduces powerful mesh creation and editing capabilities that deliver a new class of modeling tools, including the ability to reconstruct models from scanned data. Being able to directly edit wireframe geometry without interacting with the dialog box speeds up design and modification work. And the Overflow UV function allows you to replace multiple surfaces with inconsistent flows with a single surface for flowline toolpaths. You can also simplify surfaces for general modeling. Overflow UV generates a single unified surface with a desired UV flow on a connected set of surfaces.

Enhanced intelligence and automation.

A suite of system-wide enhancements helps automate tasks and speed your workflow. New automatic region chaining uses a “smart” approach to auto-select logical chained areas. Holemaking from imported solids is faster as Mastercam will now automatically extract appropriate information and pre-populate your programming options. Even tool imports have been made more intelligent as Mastercam will infer more tool properties from an incoming tool CAD model.

These are only a few of the new features and enhancements available in Mastercam 2022. For more information, please contact software@engtechgroup.com or call +353 (0) 45 435 457.

Ensure the accuracy and timeliness of your production

CIMCO’s newest product Scheduler gives you the opportunity to increase the accuracy of delivery dates, identify untapped production capacity, and allocate the optimal time for preventative maintenance. With real-time order tracking CIMCO scheduler is a powerful tool for the planner responsible for the accuracy and timeliness of the production process.

CIMCO scheduler is an advanced, yet easy to use production scheduling solution driven by data from the shop floor, provided directly by machine operators through a dedicated mobile interface. CIMCO Scheduler provides a timeline-based overview of machines, orders, and dependencies over several weeks.

A horizontal calendar is placed at the top and below it, each machine has a row with machine status, orders and shifts. Dependencies are shown with lines between orders.

CIMCO Scheduler

ClMCO Scheduler can auto-schedule orders by either placing new orders after the last one scheduled or, if possible, by placing new orders in unplanned periods with plenty of free production capacity.

Orders can be updated from the Timeline and easily moved between machines with drag-and-drop. When an order is changed, CIMCO Scheduler will reschedule the order itself and any affected orders. All the consequences of a change are presented to the user of approval.

Probing can help improve the machining process in many ways but is often underused due to the challenges and awkwardness of having to use external software, manually edit NC programs, or add probing cycles through the CNC control interface.

CIMCO Probing is a fully integrated add-on for Mastercam that addresses all these issues by making probing an integrated and natural part of the Mastercam programming process. CIMCO Probing helps improve the quality of parts, increases productivity, and reduces setup-time and manual processes. Easily program your machining centre’s spindle-mounted touch probe directly in Mastercam the same way you program toolpaths. CIMCO Probing generates machine-independent g-code that is inserted directly into the NC program and can be customized to work with any kind of probe.

Before machining, CIMCO Probing lets you utilize your CNC touch probe to ensure the correct setup of the stock material in the machine – every time. During machining, CIMCO Probing can measure the geometry of the semi-finished part and dynamically compensate for topographic irregularities. It can even stop the machine if a specified tolerance is exceeded. The finished part can be measured automatically at the machine to verify its dimensions before the part is unclamped.

Predefined Probe Cycles

CIMCO Probing includes a wide range of Probe Cycles to handle most measurement needs. Cycles can be customized through user-defined parameters with assisting drawings that make it easy to see what each parameter controls in the cycle. For convenience, CIMCO Probing can intelligently fill in parameter values based on stock model geometry.

Surface probing

Surface Probing makes it easy to select surface points and surface normal on curved geometry. For any point chosen on the model, a measuring cycle is generated, and the result of the measurements is compared with the 3d model.

Seamlessly Integrated

CIMCO Probing works seamlessly inside Mastercam and includes its own dedicated tab in the Ribbon bar with icons for adding Cycle or Surface Probing. Probing options are shown in the Manager Panel and once a cycle is added, it is stored in Mastercam’s Toolpath Manager where it can be repeatedly adjusted as needed.

Simulation

All probe tool movements can be fully visualized and verified using Mastercam’s Backplot, Verify and Machine Simulation. In addition to being convenient, this also provides confidence that your probe tool remains undamaged during machining. Probe tool collisions can be detected and resolved before the program is machined.

Engineering Technology Group (ETG) has joined forces with CAMplete to supply its computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) software across the UK and Ireland.

The Wellesbourne-based company has signed the deal to help its customers avoid expensive collisions and interferences, whilst also optimising processes to ensure the best possible machine cycle time.

These solutions are available on all new machines sales, including leading CNC technology providers Nakamura-Tome, Chiron, Hardinge Bridgeport, Quaser and Bavius.

“This is another example of us moving away from simply supplying a machine…it is now all about providing the turnkey package that can help save customers money, improve cycle times and unlock production bottlenecks,” explained Jamie Fletchmoore, Director General Manager at ETG Ireland.

“Our partnership with CAMplete provides another dimension to our all-round service. After generating tool paths and checking the full kinematics of the machine, users can then run their code through the software for post processing, simulation and optimisation.”

He continued: “These solutions can potentially be fitted to all of the CNC machine tools we supply from new, with some also available to be retrofitted. The ability to avoid costly collisions can save thousands of pounds in replacement parts and machine downtime.

“Not only does it safeguard the machine, it gives the end user optimisation over the process as they can see in real time what the actual cycle time of the part will be, without cutting anything. Once it has been proven, the programme can be sent direct into the machine ready to go.”

CAMplete joins ETG’s already-established software portfolio, with industry-leading products including Mastercam and CIMCO.
